There are several ways to get your fitness routine created or tweaked. Some prefer to workout at home while others like the gym. Some like to get in the zone on their own and others like the energy and leadership of a group class.
Whatever you choose, there is a fit for you out there. THE hardest step is actually getting yourself to participate that FIRST time. Once you do, the next hardest step is KEEPING the momentum. There is NO lack of excuses for not doing your fitness routine so beware. When you’re not motivated or feeling it, you will justify not participating.
However, let me say that EVERYONE struggles with motivation at one time or another.
Keys to a successful long term fitness lifestyle:
-Find what motivates you (memes, filling your social media with people whom you admire, getting your workout clothes on first thing in the morning or before you leave the office, etc) and keep it in front of you. Make it a way of life to make sure you are putting the right things in your life and in front of your eyes to get you motivated to participate in your fitness routines.
-Find someone who has a track record of consistency to be your accountability partner. There will be days when you need that extra push to get out the door or put the workout video on...find someone who is already strong and will allow you to lean on them when needed.
-Don’t be afraid to do something new or change what isn’t working for you. There’s a lot to be said for perseverance, but when you have stuck with something and you aren’t seeing the results you need, move on. If you’re doing classes, but really enjoyed the at home workout you did the other day, do more at home workouts. If you’ve been walking for months and haven’t noticed any reduction in inches around your waist, try a little weightlifting. Muscle will burn more fat that fat...so build some muscle! No, you will not bulk up! That takes years of targeted training and a huge nutritional intake...so feel free to lift!
-Work with a trainer if you’ve never worked out before. They can give you a plan, motivate you, hold you accountable and track your results. Not to mention making sure you’re doing your exercises correctly so you lessen your chances of injury. Seek out a trainer that you can work easily with but one who pushes you. Interview them - don’t settle for the first person who greets you at the door.
-If you stop for a period of time, just get started again. There will be changes in seasons in your life and times you need to tweak your schedule. Just get back into it with a new routine. The only person who will have no results is the one that never gets started. You can start today...again!
